Anyone else interested in ghost towns?

Is anyone else interested in exploring genuine ghost towns?
I don't mean the ones that have been preserved and/or turned into tourist attractions, although those are fun, also.

I have explored a few ghost towns in Nevada, a bunch in Arizona, and several in Colorado. It is great fun!

If you are a ghosttowner, please reply and let me know what areas of the country you have explored,etc.

Thanks for all of your recent posts -- always great to see relatively new folks sharing intel on this forum!

We like checking out ghost towns too. A couple we have visited include Skidoo,
Leadfield, Carrara.

But we are only rank amateurs compared to some out there -- a couple of sites we really like for finding new sites -- Explore California and some found on our routes links page

You mentioned ghost towns in nevada so you may have allready been to Rhyolite? If not it's pretty neat and just down the road from death valley national park. It's pretty small but pretty interesting too. It features some pretty odd and spooky,um, statues(?) I guess you would call them. It's kinda eerie to visit just before sundown.

What I most remember about Rhyolite just before dusk was the large number of jackrabbits cruising around.

thanks for all the info. I am considering a trip to Rhyolite and then into Death Valley. I have read about ghost towns in Death Valley. Does anyone know much about them? Seen them? got any advice?

The route from Rhyolite into Death Valley is a good one, since the roads are still pretty whacked from the flash floods earlier in the year.

There are scores of ghost town sites in Death Valley, we have visited <a href = "http://www.roadtripamerica.com/places/skidoo.htm">Skidoo<a/> and <a href = "http://www.roadtripamerica.com/places/leadfield.htm">Leadfield<a/> but because of the aforementioned floods you will need to speak with rangers at the park to confirm current road conditions.

The more remote and untouched the better. I haven't had the opportunity yet to visit the ones in the desert of the Southwest US yet, but I've been to some pretty remote towns in the mountains on the east coast. But yes, ghost towns have always intrigued me.

Although not all that remote, Parsons in Colorado (scroll down the page for a photo) is in a beautiful location. Lots of old mines (at least the buildings) worth exploring in the Leadville area. Here in the East it is more likely to find abandoned buildings rather than entire towns. A couple of my favorites:

Hi there. I recently visited several ghost towns in western Montana - some were genuine ghost towns, some were tourist traps, all were great fun. I posted some information and pictures from my trip on the "Field Report" forum. It was my first such trip, but I enjoyed myself so much I am sure I will go on more ghost town hunts in the future.
