Living in Philadelphia you can't spit without hitting a diner. I live a few blocks away from the Mayfair Diner, but overall I think the experience there is nothing to brag about for people passing by the area. My two favorite diner's to get the Philadelphia experience is the South St. Diner in center city phila(2nd and south) and the Tom Jones Diner in Brookhaven, PA (PA I-95 exit 6, then PA-352N about 5 miles on your right)

That said....sometimes you need to have a few other websites in your planning arsenal. This website focuses on roadside diners. They are really into the history of classic diners and a great resource.
oneonta, ny has a good 24 hour diner called Neptunes. I know the owner and the food is really good, especially for a 24 hour joint. Also, Airport Diner in Kutztown, PA is open 24 hours and its a nice place to hang out. Just in case youre in the area...
