Petersburg & Emporia, VA - Concerns about area

My husband and I and our 2 babies are traveling to Fl from Ny. We are looking for a hotel to stay in to break up the drive. What are these areas like or can anyone reccommend a good place to stop overnight?

I stayed at a Hampton Inn at Hopewell (near Petersburg) last year. The hotel was very nice, and while I didn't spend much time there (we were headed to Yorktown and the OBX), I don't remember any problems in the area. Bob

At mile post 1 (I-95) you might stop at the Virginia Welcome Center they often have discount coupons for local motels and can give you tips about the area. And for goodness sakes, stop at exit 11B and get some of their signature chocolate covered peanut brittle at Virginia Peanuts in Emporia.

If you can hold out to Exit 69 -- there is a Candlewood Suites, which is very comfortable.

The next morning -- ya gotta stop at Carl's and get some amazing frozen custard in Fredericksburg!
