Long Island, New York to Phoenix, AZ.

I will be driving cross country from Long Island, NY. to the Phoenix, Arizona area in October and would like to hear from anyone with some tips on decent and inexpensive motels to stay at. I'm traveling on a very small budget! Thank you.

Check out the Gear-Up section "cheap and free places to sleep" and "ways to save money on a trip" in the Planning summer roadtrips section. Stay out of big cities, motels are usually cheaper in the less crowded areas.
