Rt 7 and 7A in VT are great roads for scenery in VT. There is a great place for break on RT 9 about midway across the state call Skyview restaurant. They have a great breakfast. Also, if you have some extra time (maybe a half day) Saratoga, NY is just over the border and is a cool place to visist that has a hot springs spa to rest achy road bones. Check the net if you need reservations.
One highly-touted road in Vermont is Route 100. I really enjoy this road. Very nice drive through the Green Mountains.
One suggested route: US-44 to CT-8 (becomes MA-8, then becomes VT-8/100) to VT-9 to VT-100 to US-2. A nice back road jaunt.
US-7 is also a nice drive; I've driven it many times myself. It's a more direct route and it's quicker speed-wise South of Rutland.
I haven't been to Burlington in quite some time (~7-8 years)...hmm, maybe it's time I went again!
Enjoy!
