Default Retracing the Lewis & Clark Trail

This July and August, I will retrace the Lewis and Clark Trail, from Wood River IL to Fort Clatsop, OR. I will follow the trail as closely as modern highways allow.

Does anyone know of any local reenactments or other commemorative events that are planned along the Missouri River L&C route this summer that I might include in my trip? My dates are flexible, so I can plan around them if needed. If you can provide date, location and web site (if any), I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

    Default L&C website

I lost the link in a computer crash sometime back, but if you do a search you will find that there are several websites devoted to Lewis & Clark events. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for easily enough. I would start with Lewis & Clark Re-enactments as my first search and go from there.

I've been looking at those also -- but I was hoping to find some local smaller events that maybe aren't as well publicized. Most of the events on the large sites are taking place well before my trip, and the main government site is kind of vague on dates and what is actually occurring. It hasn't been of much value so far. I may make a special trip back to St Louis for some events as I have family there and can visit with them at the same time.

    Default L&C memorial

Bob, I have been to the Lewis & Clark memorial just outside of St. Louis -- kind of in an interesting place. Somewhere in the files, I have some press materials, I will dig them out and post later.

Great, thanks! I was there last summer but they were only open a few days a week at that time and my day wasn't one of them. Anyway, that's the place where I'll start my journey!

    Default L&C

Figure out when your going, deduct 200 years from that date and find out where L&C were. That is where you'll want to look for events. If you only do one L&C site, St. Louis would be it (especially around May 14th).

Default Working on a product review and...

    Bob,

While working on a review of the road trip planning tool produced by the Hampton Inn hotel chain, I looked at their suggestions for the L&C route. It's pretty good and gives some useful ideas for planning purposes. Check it out at click here.

The re-enactment at Camp Riviere du Bois is already over by now . . . but the national Lewis & Clark exhibition will remain in St. Louis (at the Jefferson Memorial in Forest Park) until September I think . . . you can find more specifics at www.explorestlouis.com . . . the Clark grave at Bellefontaine Cemetary is interesting too, as are the exhibits at the Arch and the Old Courthouse (both in downtown St. Louis) . . . finally, I understand that there will be some re-enactments at the Fair St. Louis that will be held downtown in St. Louis on the July 4th weekend (probably from Thurs/Fri. thru Sun.) along with food, concerts, parades, fireworks, kids rides, etc.

Default Best Site we have found

    Bob,

The events celebrating the anniversary of the Lewis & Clark expedition have tended to not be very well publicized. There is a web site that does seem to include just about everything we are aware of. Click here for the "official" The National Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commemoration.

The news and updates have not been kept up. But the Calendar of Events is pretty useful. I used 05/31/04 as a test date and used no other qualifier and found about 25 events along the route on that date.

Actually, there is another site that is slightly more useful. There are a few more ads on this one, but I found the "Travel the Trail" links on the left column to be pretty helpful and interesting.
