north carolina to california

me and a buddy of mine are planning a trip from the north carolina coast to california and back. we are not looking to make time but just want to enjoy the trip. if anyone has any suggestions as to good places to stop and see and stops along the way or just general tips i would love to hear them as ive never been any farther west than tennesee. thanks
