I am taking my first solo road trip from Maryland to Florida in November. I am a little worried, being a woman traveling alone, but I'm excited too. I plan on following the coast, possibly sticking to US 17? Any tips on good places to stop or stay? I have a limited budget, so I need to stick to hostels and camping, and I will take a week and a half to do the trip one way.

    Thanks!

    Default Route 17

After you cross the Bay Bridge Tunnel and FINALLY get on 17 don't always expect it to be fast sailing. Most of it is two lane with traffic. The bigger towns along the way have a good selection of motels. Consider stopping at Newbern, NC it is a gem we almost missed. The colonial capital of NC with a great historic district and the foundation of Pepsi Cola.

A must is the Outer Banks in northern North Carolina. If you want an adventure check out Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head and go for your first hang gliding lesson. Tell the owner John Harris Brad from summer of 98 says hi.
