Chicago to Santa Barbara, CA

My boyfriend and I are making the trip from Chicago to Santa Barbara. If anyone has any ideas about must sees along the way please let me know! Also, any info about camping along the way would be appreciated! This will be in early June, does anyone know how hot its gonna get?
