My friends and I plan on making a cross country road trip from NYC to SF for spring break (March 14-24), drive one way and fly back the other. Is this even possible? Is so, any suggestions?

Hope you mean your friends would take turns driving right through? You could do the drive in THREE 18-hour (or longer) days.
If you have TEN days altogether - you could stop at a couple points along the way (Grand Canyon for example).
Fly back would be the only way to do it if you don't want to be driving the whole time & not seeing anything.
How do you intend to do this??? I assume you'll be using a rental vehicle since you wouldn't be driving your own vehicle one-way!
A rental car is usually much more expensive to drop off at a different destination (not round-trip). You'll have to look into that. Also one-way flights are usually expensive.
It might be cheaper to just fly both ways & rent a car once in San Francisco.
Also with a rental vehicle - be sure it has UNLIMITED mileage.
You will be able to see some things along the way if you stick to either I-70, I-80, or I-90 for most of the way across. (I-80 goes directly into SF from NY, but the other two are a bit more scenic in spots.
