Hi, i'm a freshman in college and my friends and I are planning a roadtrip for our spring break. We figured that it would be a pretty inexpensive getaway for us. We are going to start in Iowa and we want to end up at the Gulf (Definatly New Orleans to check out the French Quarter)before we make our return trip home. We will have about 7-8 days to complete our trip. I was wondering if we were allowing enough time and how much money we should expect to spend. Keep in mind we are used to living on a tight budget, so we can scrap! Also in another thread I read about staying in hostels... could you give me more information about where to find these and what they are. I have read the Bad Girls' Guide to the Open Road and highly recommend it. If nothing else it's a great laugh! Thanks for all your help!

One of the first
Jenny,
Usually the postings for information about Spring Break trips starts on January 2nd each year -- so you are ahead of the curve!
The most complete guide that we are familiar with for hostel listings in the USA is the one written by Jim Williams. A link for his book can be found on the "International" page at http://www.roadtripamerica.com/links/international.htm
Depending upon where in IA you are starting from, the round trip will be a minimum of 2300 miles. If the roads were dry and clear and you stopped only for fuel and food you could drive to New Orleans in about 19 hours, so I reckon that 7-8 days should give you plenty of time to hang out and enjoy Spring Break in Louisiana.

Don't pass up on two great parties along the way. Nashville and Memphis are both alot of fun at night, particularly on the weekends.
Good luck and safe driving.

spring break
hey jenny, how are you? As someone who's taken a pretty big roadtrip before (boston-florida), and as someone who is going to do it again this spring break(boston-florida), i would definitley suggest that you hit up panama city beach(FL), daytona beach(FL), San Padre Island(TX), Miami(FL), and Virgina Beach(VA). In order to save dough, i highly suggest that you stick to a strict daily budget. In my personal experience I've found that, on vacation (especially spring break), i completely lose track of the amount of money i spend, and by the 5th or 6th day into the trip, my funds have been completely depleted. My other BIG suggestion is that you go with someone you get along with REALLY well. Even people who just slightly annoy you normally, can make you so irritable, that you feel like your just going to snap at them. GOOD LUCK!!!
