family of 7: MN to Palm Springs in Feb.

We have a week at a time share in Palm Springs Feb 16-23. We need to get out there and back as quickly as possible, but I'm afraid of mountains-- especially in winter.

What's the best route to take in mid-February? We are planning 3 VERY LONG days of driving.

Also, any suggestions on stops with cheap lodging would be greatly appreciated! (Thinking of stopping in DesMoines, Denver and Cedar City, UT) to even things out.

Des Moines to Denver is a LONG drive. You'd be better off trying to make it to Omaha or Lincoln, NE the first day. That will even out your drive a bit.

Otherwise, your trip seems do-able, especially if you're planning on long driving days ahead of time. Don't be afraid of the mountains unless they're expecting particularly heavy snowfalls. They do a great job of keeping the roads clear.
