taking a road trip and need help...

Two of my friends and I are going on a road trip around America (a once in a lifetime vacation).
We're starting in MS (where we live) and going through most of the states on the coast/border, but going through a few states in central America.
We're planning on buying a mini-van for this so that we won't be crammed in a small car with all of our luggage.
We'll just be passing through some places that we don't have anything interesting to see there... but we'll be stopping to hand out Gospel booklets at those places.
We're planning on staying with YWAM as much as possible to avoid the costs of motels, and occasionally will probably pull over in a parking lot and sleep there. There will be three of us, so it's possible that we'll take turns driving through the night some of the time.
Has anybody ever done anything like this? How much did it cost you for food/motels/gas? How long did it take?
We're trying to work this into the summer, but we know it'll take several months so we're not sure how it's going to work to get back on time for college in the fall.

Oh, and do you have any suggestions on things we should be sure to pack that we might not have thought of?
We're also going to camp at parks a lot of the time in tents. So most of the time we will NOT be in motels to cut down the cost. And we'll take a cooler and make ourselves sandwiches a lot of the time so that we won't have to pay.
We're doing everything possible to cut down on how much luggage we'll have to take and seriously cut down the price.

WE HAVE TENTED FOR MANY YEARS WORKING OUT OF VANS AND PICK UPS WE PITCH A 2ND TENT FOR OUR GEAR 1. WE GOT THE STUFF OUT OF THE WEATHER 2. GAVE US A CLEAN CARGO SPACE TO WORK WITH 3. THE STUFF STAYED ORGANIZED. 4. KEPT THE SLEEPING AREA CLEAR OF CLUTTER WATER AND DIRT AS WE ONLY GO IN THERE TO SLEEP. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR TRIP
