1st Road Trip - Miami (FL) to Los Angeles (CA) in 2 weeks ??

Hi!

First of I've got to say that this site has helped a lot already... all your comments are fantastic!

I'm planning my first road trip from Miami to Los Angeles via I-40 going West. Not sure if I should take I-80 or I-70 going East. My first stop I'm hoping will be Montgomery, AL. I've been to Georgia several times so I won't be stopping there, if I can help it.

I want to visit the point where the 4 states meet. Also, I want to go to Memphis, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, and Santa Fe going West.

I'm not sure if this is going to be a solo trip or if I will have a friend or two join me.

I would like to do this in 2 weeks... is this crazy???

Any tips, advise, comments, suggestions, anything, will help!

Have you considered not going all the way out Los Angeles? If you end your trip in Arizona or Utah and then head back you'll have more time to see some of the places you are talking about.

Also, the actual Four Corners monument is pretty cool, but not nearly as good as the area that surrounds it. You MUST check out Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, and if you go farther west, Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks.

The novelty of 4-Corners can be experienced in about five minutes -- it probably is worth plunking an appendage in each of the four corners and getting your photo taken -- a rite of passage for most road trippers, but be sure and check out Monument Valley. The main highway (US-163) will give you great glimpses of the area, but be sure to take the extra side trip to the Navajo Tribal Park, (also called Ya at eeh).

About half way through the valley you will see a road going to the east -- at the end of the road is an overlook and an entrance kiosk for an amazing toll road run by the Navajo People. The cost is about $10 and gives you access to a remarkably rough, (but passable for two-wheel sedans) road into four or five spectacular Mesas and their environs. This spot is one of our favorite in the west. Don't miss it!

Hi Rosemary, I'm actually going from PA down to Miami and over to LA myslef in a couple of months. Angus, why would you not recomend LA, I think LA is a must see. As is, I plan on moving there, and was wonderin what it was you didn't like about it. Thanks.

I'm relocating to L.A. myself tomorrow, hence my Nebraska/East Colorado Fun query. Strange that you'd think
that I don't like Los Angeles. I wasn't speaking poorly of it, I just felt that a two week trip would be better spent on the in between stuff that most people just fly over.

Los Angeles has it's problems as far as being a good place to live (smog, traffic, annoying Hollywood types), but overall it would suit almost anyone just fine.

I will think about the suggestions and comments and finalize my route going west.

I still need mad help with the coming back part.

Also, what about a station wagon for the trip? Any suggestions?

Oh, OK, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something wrong with LA. Of course like most cities there are some problems with them, and just wanted to make sure there weren't any many major problems I wasnt aware of. Have fun in LA.

I plugged in all the places you wanted to go from Miami to Los Angeles and then had you coming back on I 70. Your trip is about 6,300 miles total. If you only have two weeks you are going to be driving 450 miles each and every day. You aren't going to have any time for siteseeing!

Yes, I think it's a crazy idea. Either cut out some of your trip or take a longer vacation. If you really want to see the west then fly into Las Vegas or Phoenix and rent a car and do some siteseeing.
