VT to CO to CA with my dog

Hi- My names Aleta-27 - I'm taking a year off from teaching to travel - wanted to see some of our country so I'm planning a road trip with my golden retriever- in November- I would like any advice on budget places to stay and things to do and see with my dog- love to hike and bike-
any route suggestions? first time road trip-from Vermont to Colorado then on to California- all suggestions appreciated- thanks a bunch!!
