Default NYC to LA via national monuments and cool stops

So I read most of the NY to LA postings, which are all good. Problem is, I still need a NYC to LA route that will be short (<=5 days) and let me see this great country. I would like to hit as many monuments, road side attractions and state parks that I can while keeping the trip short. Ideally I would love a route that is three hours driving, then something, then three hours, then something, etc.

Anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks!

Default How fast can you drive?

    Josh,

I hope you realize that the shortest LA to NY (with 0 sightseeing detours) is still 2800 miles. If you were to travel around the speed limit and average 8-10 hours per day for driving, fuel stops & food it would take virtually all of the 5 days you have budgeted. If you plan to sightsee for 2-3 hours 2-3 times per day you will either have to average 100 mph or never sleep more than 2-3 hours during each of those 5 days on the road.

Driving without a co-driver and not sleeping can be a real problem.
