Default Only If You Have To

Right now the last thing the areas of Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina that you'll be passing through need is more people coming in. Unless this is a trip of necessity, it would be wise to postpone it for a few weeks until roads can be repaired and power restored. But if you have to...

I-65 south to Louisville KY, I-64 east to Lexington KY, I-75 south for about 85 miles to North Corbin KY, to US-25E south to I-81 NORTH for 15 miles to US-11E south then 15 miles to Greeneville TN. From Greenville, you'll be on smaller roads for a while... TN-70 south (the exit from US-11E is marked as US-321, but take it and follow the signs to TN-70 south). TN-70 becomes NC-208 - continue to Hurricane NC, US-25 south to Weaverville, I-26 east to Flat Rock NC, US-25 south to Greenville.

Be prepared to self-sustain for most of the later part of this trip. Bring a cooler for food, fill your tank no later than London KY. It will be around 400 miles from Lexington to Greenville so make sure you can get that far on a single tank of gas. You may be lucky and find something open, but I wouldn't count on it if you plan on making this trip in the next few days. The Asheville NC area was particularly devastated. Cell phone service will be spotty at best. There will be numerous construction sites along any route you can take. Indeed, I wouldn't currently try to make this trip in a single day, so you might want to confirm lodging around London KY. There is at least one motel there, and not much farther down the road.

    Good Luck,
    AZBuck

Trying to do this in 1 day would be really pushing it due to all the damage in that part of the country. I normally don't post links to Google Maps, but in this case I will, it's a bit complicated.

Please heed Buck's advice. This is not a good time to travel by road in that area. I know what Google says for drive time, but that's very wishful thinking.

You couldn't take I-40 if you wanted to, it's going to be closed for months.

Note on the map link that you will have to get off I-26 and back on a few times due to closures.

More importantly, NCDOT is urging people NOT to travel in the whole western part of the state except for emergency.

NOW - I see that your ultimate destination is Hilton Head. I would strongly suggest you cancel the Greer reservation and go from Indy to Washington DC, then I-95 south to Hilton Head.

Please heed the advice given to you. Fuel stations that have fuel, power to run them, and the connection to the computers, can be few and far between in many areas. Hubby and I ran into that as we travel home from a trip. NC, for one, is urging folks to STAY AWAY.

If you are home and are trying to travel to the East Coast for pleasure, you may want to rethink this trip. There's another storm brewing in the Gulf, and who knows where it's headed.

Since I made my post, the Google route has changed. It now looks like it's basically the same as what Buck recommended. I still think it's wise to stay out of that particular area of the country.

Another option would be I-65 to Nashville, I-24 to Chattanooga, I-75 to Atlanta, I-85 to Greer or I-20 to Columbia. This is a bit too far to do in 1 day but a lot better than going via DC. It keeps you off the small roads which is probably a good idea with the conditions.

Be aware, at the intersection of I-24 and I-75, there is a lot of construction that will cause delays. I-75 in Atlanta - if there are two people, you can use the HOV lanes and they help a LOT. If you have a toll receiver like SunPass, tha t is good in GA, you can also use the Express Lanes, no matter how few people are in your car.

NC has a travel ban for the entire western portion of the state, so your only reasonable and considerate routes should be as I posted yesterday - via Nashville, Chattanooga, and Atlanta - or I-81 to I-77 toward Charlotte.
