Name the Rock Art?

I been promising to start this thread and here it is!

First let's start with the types of "Rock Art" and how they are made.

Petroglyphs are images carved, pecked and or cutting into rock surface.
Pictographs are designs or images painted onto rock using natural pigments.
Pictoglyphs are figures or designs on rocks that incorporate both carving and painting techniques.
Geoglyphs are also called Intaglios and these images are usually very large. They are made by scraping away surface material on the desert floor.

I've always been fascinated by Rock Art and have always loved finding them. Over the last 40+ years we've found our fair share but since my DH retired 13 years ago we've been hunting down more and more and in some remote places.

I thought I'd start out with an easy to identify panel of petroglyph. This panel was one of the first I ever saw back in 1977. We've been back many times including last fall when this picture was taken.



Can you name this panel of petroglyphs?

I bet I won't have to give any clues!

Me, I like to get my News on paper. Back in those days, they put it all on a Rock. I hear that in Utah, they like to make a State Historic Monument out of things like this--especially around Moab.

I dunno. It certainly looks familiar. Let me think about it.

I'm never good with remembering this kind of stuff. But I'm going to hazard a guess and say Fremont Indian State Park along I-70 in Utah.

Newspaper Rock State Historical Monument, near the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

Oddly, I've shot thousands of images of petroglyphs in the southwest, including numerous visits to the Fremont Indian State Park (mentioned above by Donna) but I've never visited Newspaper Rock.

Hint: A source of year-round water is adjacent

Less than two hours from downtown Las Vegas.

And I like the spirit-dude in the middle doing something - throwing a spear through three loops perchance?

Yes, Rick left some good clues and Mark is correct, it is Newspaper Rock State Historical Park.

So Mark, have you not been to the Needles District of Canyonlands or you have and just didn't stop at Newspaper Rock?

These look awesome! My first thought was Valley of Fire, but the rock color wasn't right. I just happened on to the answer by chance because of the last picture so I'll give others some time to figure it out. I will put this on my list of places to go when I'm in the area!

Clue:

This canyon is near Spirit Mountain and some consider the canyon to be sacred. It the location of the birthing legend of the Nuwu, the Southern Paiute nation.

Well, I can't say as I've ever been there, but your clues point pretty squarely toward Grapevine Canyon, just outside of Laughlin! Next time I come up your way for a visit, Mark, I'll have to make a little detour and check it out!

More clues are available if needed, but this particular place is about as obvious they come!
