    Default Where Matters

Any recommendations we might have would be wholly dependent on whether you're going to Pensecola, Miami, Tampa, or someplace else. You've not told us that - so there's not much we can do for you yet.

    Welcome back!

Where in Florida? It's a pretty big state. Also, how many days do you plan on taking for the trip, and do you just want the fastest route or do you want to sightsee?

Florida is over 350 miles from north end of Jacksonville to south end of Miami. With a six year old, am I guessing Orlando for Disney? Looking at your previous posts you must be in the Maryland suburbs of DC. Given that you already know one of the worst parts of your trip will be getting around DC, and I don’t see many alternatives there. It will help you will be heading south once on 95 in Virginia but don’t think it’ll be easy against morning rush hour. Even then I-95 south is very busy until you get south of Fredericksburg. Definitely plan two full days to reach Florida and maybe more depending on where you are going. The great gurus here can give a lot of details once they have more details.

How much time do you have for the Florida stay?

Some fantastic Florida attractions for a 6 year old include Weekie Wachee, Homosassa Springs, Lego Land, Lion Country Safari, camping at WDW Fort Wilderness, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Robbie’s of Islamorada, and much more.

For the ultimate experience, head to Key West and hop a ferry or seaplane to Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas National Park, 70 miles out to sea. Rough camp on the island a couple days.

Another transit option if the AutoTrain from Lorton (south of DC) to Sanford (north or Orlando). Each direction is non-stop (meaning no pickup for passengers or automobiles), nominal departure and arrival times are 3:45p and 8:45a, for each direction. You need to be checked-in by 2p but will usually want to arrive by noon. It will take up to 90 minutes to unload all the vehicles. Sometimes there are train delays (sometimes there are traffic jams on the highways). Dinner and a continental breakfast are included. You can do a round trip or one-way. You pay for your vehicle and each passenger.
