Default It can change so quickly, but..........

Yosemite is still experiencing some glorious weather for the time of year with the outlook remaining settled. In the Valley the daytime temperatures look to remain in the mid 60f range and at over 8000ft on the pass they remain at mid to high 50f. What amazes me is, usually clear skies and high elevation means nighttime temps below freezing, but at the moment even ice doesn't look a threat to cause a closure.

    Default Closure. (Temporary ??)

Yosemite's officials have opted to close the pass at 6pm on Tues 20th November in advance of a winter storm heading their way.

    Official statement

The Tioga and Glacier Point Roads in Yosemite National Park will close to all vehiclular traffice beginning at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 due to incoming winter weather. The roads will reopen as weather and road conditions permit. This is not necessarily a seasonal closure.

A series of winter storms are expected to pass through the Yosemite area beginning on Tuesday evening through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Yosemite National Park is open year-round with snow removal on all other roads within the park. Highway 120 West, Highway 140, and Highway 41 remain open year-round and provide access to Yosemite Valley. The Hetch Hetchy Road is open for day use throughout the winter months.

All roads within the park are subject to chain control or temporary closures due to hazardous driving conditions. All motorists are required to carry tire chains, even if their car is equipped with four-wheel drive, while driving in the park during the winter months.

It is estimated that up to 20 inches of snow could accumulate by Thanksgiving with more expected to arrive through the weekend. If that turns out to be the case I think we could be looking at a permanent closure being announced sometime in the near future. If the 20th is announced as the permanent closing date for the season it would mean we have a new Tppc (Tioga pass prognosticator champion) who goes by the name of Mark Sedenquist. We will have to wait and see !

    Dave.
