  1. Default Portland, OR to San Jose, CA

I work in high-tech but have an extreme phobia of airplanes due to a bad flight I had once. It's looking like I will have to make the trip in one day.

Is that possible from Portland to San Jose?

Is a rental car too expensive?

    Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

Portland to San Jose is a little further than we recommend in one day at 670 miles and most likely 11-12 hours of driving but it is doable with lots of short breaks to stretch the legs and get refreshments along the way.

I am sorry to hear of your bad experience aboard a flight that has left you with a phobia, I can only imagine what it must be like, but if somehow you could overcome it and try flying again, a short trip like this would be ideal to do so. Statistically the plane would also be the safer option, but I doubt that is of much comfort to you.

With regards to the car rental, I think only you can decide if it is too expensive when compared to your budget and what other options you have, plus if it is a one way drop off [added fees] or a return trip that might have the car sitting idle for whatever reason while in San Jose.

Good luck with your trip !

Have you considered Amtrak? There's one train a day each way, and it's an overnighter each way.
