  1. Default Westward Road trip

Hi, we are from upstate SC and I am planning a 2 week trip out west with my husband a 4 children 10, 9, 5, 3. I was wondering, what is a reasonable distance to travel. I have never been to the grand canyon but wasn't sure if that was too far to attempt in two weeks. Thanks!

    Welcome to the RTA forum!

A good rule of thumb is that you can travel about 500 miles on a good day on the road. That puts you on the road for about 8-10 hours, and gives you time to make a few short stops every few hours to have fun and let your kids have from freedom!

The Grand Canyon is about 2000 miles each way, so that would put you on the road for about 8 days, leaving you 6 days to explore the canyon and surrounding area (Sedona, Monument Valley, Zion, Bryce, etc). I think that would be pretty workable. I'd probably look at a trip that basically follows I-40 on the way out, see the Canyon, work your way up through Utah, and then head back on I-70 across Colorado (or vice versa). There are other options of course, but that's something you could start with.
