I would take 247 to 62, it actually cuts off 15 miles.

Mapping programs say to take 10/79/15 to San Diego, but that stretch of 79 goes through some heavily populated areas. Taking 10/60/215/15 is almost 20 miles longer, but I'd bet the travel time would be pretty similar - about 2.5 hours. Another option would be over the mountain - 74/371/79 to 15 just south of Temecula - and that is a very scenic drive. It would not be any faster than the other 2 - and will probably take a bit longer, maybe close to 3 hours. If you want to stay scenic, stay on 79 all the way to I-8. That's still only about a 4 hour drive at the most.

There is a stretch of I-15 north of San Diego that's in the middle of a widening and reconstruction project - and it's a bear in rush hour.
