  1. Default from chicago for 4 nights

    Hello all,

I hope someone has some suggestions for me!

My boyfriend and I want to take a road trip this weekend (Memorial Day) with our dog. We are planning on being gone four nights, and don't want to drive more than 10 - 12 hours or so one way. Hoping the weather holds up, we are willing to go north, south, east or west (We'd prefer to end up in sunny, warm weather).

We enjoy nature - hiking trails, beaches, driving scenery. I recently hurt my back so I'm a bit reluctant to camp, otherwise we would be camping the entire time. I'd love to be able to walk around a small, cute town as well - but with the dog it probably makes more sense to stick to nature.

We'll need cheap-ish hotels that allow dogs - do most of them allow dogs these days?

We started considering the Smokey Mtns, southern Michigan or southern Illinois. It is difficult to choose without knowing the area.

Any suggestions would be most helpful, thanks in advance!!

    Default circle

    Welcome to the RTA forum!

There are quite a few places that would come to mind, although doing a circle tour of Lake Michigan is one of the first things that I'd think of. I'd particularly like that because of the amount of national forest land in the UP that you'd be going through, which is great dog country. Here are more suggestions with that idea in mind.

I will say that allowing dogs is certainly not something that I'd say most places do. Some will, but that will require some advance planning, especially if you have a larger animal.

Motel 6 is fairly cheap, and most of them allow one well-behaved dog per room.

The Great Midwest, Illinois to be precise

    Default North Coast

Try the US North Coast, Ohio along Lake Erie. Beautiful scenery and lots to see and do.
