  1. Default Road trip starting at Denver Colorado

My wife and I intend to visit friends in Denver in July 2009 and then have approximately 12 days which we would like to spend seeing some of the surrounding sites/states by car. Has anyone been on either a circular trip beginning and ending at Denver or a linear trip starting at Denver and ending elsewhere? If so may we have your itinery as we have no idea what we should see and what we can miss out.

I am 50 and my wife is a little younger. we are fit and well travelled.

    Many thanks

    Default Rocky Mountain High

Ceud mėle fāilte! Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

I've spent the odd week here and there touring Colorado, and there will be no shortage of things to do. What you'll have to decide is how far afield you want to travel and how much time you want to spend 'on the ground' at the various sites. Within easy distance of Denver, there's (to the north) the college town of Boulder with it's great downtown pedestrian mall, Estes Park which is home to the Stanley Hotel (the inspiration for Stephen King's 'The Shining'), Rocky Mountain National Park; (to the south) Pike's Peak which you can drive to the top of - over 14,000 feet, the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs; (to the west) the Eisenhower Tunnel and/or Loveland Pass, the ski town of Breckenridge, and the casino towns of Black Hawk and Central City.

If you plan on doing a driving tour, then you would be hard pressed to do better than first heading south and then taking US-160 west over Wolf Creek Pass to Cortez and Mesa Verde National Park, then backtracking a bit to take US-550, the Million Dollar Highway, north to US-50 east through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and US-285/US-24 to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument before returning to Denver.

    Default A couple of ideas.

    Hi there,

We are planning to do a 12 day or so tour from Denver and back ,starting in late Sept. Although it's our first time in the area I have done some planning already and thought I would share it. [Who knows, I might learn something] ;-)

From Denver we are heading into the Rockies and Estes park and taking the Trial Ridge road to Grand Lake. Then onto I-70 and possibly the 6 over Loveland pass to Dillon res. and 91 to Leadville and 24 to Twin Lakes and through Aspen on the 82 back up to Glenwood Springs on I-70. Head West through Grand junction and visit Colorado N.M and head to Moab and Arches NP. Continue South on the 191 to Canyon De Chelley and through Window Rock nr Gallup and back North on the 491 to Mesa Verde.
From there to Durango and up the 550 [million dollar highway] to Montrose and the Black canyon of the Gunnison. After the Curecanti recreation area head down the 149 through Lake City to South Fork and then head East to the Great sand dunes NP. From there it's a fairly straight forward run back to Denver, but depending on time Pikes Peak is one option. It's a busy schedule but doable in my book.
I was actually thinking of Santa Fe and Taos as well but think that might make it a little to busy.

A on way trip could see you do the Rockies, Black Canyon, Million dollar highway and Mesa Verde and then head through Monument Valley to the Grand Canyon. From there you could head South to Phoenix through Sedona and Red Rock country for your flight or West and over the Hoover Dam and end with the bright lights of Vegas.

    food for thought right enough.

  5. Default Million Dollar Highway

The Million Dollar Highway with the old historical mining towns is supposed to be one of the most scenic roads in America, you shouldn´t miss it :)
