    Default Rockhunting in Arkansas

A friend and I are going to be in Arkansas next weekend. We are both geologists and are looking for a little fun rockhunting. We've both been there before, but those were always for courses and this time we just want to be easy going tourisist.

Does anyone have any suggestions. We obviously know of some places, but it is always nice to get other peoples opinions.

I don't know much about rock hunting. Are you looking for any specific types of rocks? That might help you get better replies.

Well, fortunately the geologic map of Arkansas is available on line. Clearly, you'll want to keep to the northwestern half of the state. The Arkansas Geological Survey also offers a number of resources. From my own experience, if you want a unique challenge, then the place to go is Crater of Diamonds State Park, the only place in the world where you can dig for (and keep!) diamonds.
