Default Best is a Relative Term

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Only you can determine which route best suits your needs. Factually, I-10/I-20 is faster (on average) by an hour or so, because it is all Interstate, but I-15/I-40/US287 is actually pretty much exactly the same distance, both are within an eyelash of 1,435 miles. If you're looking for a RoadTrip route with attractions along the way, then 'I-10' would have Kartchner Caverns, White Sands, the Guadeloupe Mountains and Monahans Sand Hills all within short side trips, while 'I-40' offers the Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, Petroglyph National Monument, and Cadillac Ranch. Neither is going to involve any serious mountain driving, although Flagstaff is more than a mile high (7,000'). This also means that the northern route (I-40) might tend to be a bit cooler. In the end there is no universal 'best', just the route that better suits what you want out of a road at the moment.
