Thread: Rental service.

  1. Default Rental service.

this question might seem quite stupid.
iīm brazilian and the rental service over here in Brazil depends on place.
we pay, in some rent-a-car, for kilometers driven, other ones charge you per day.
how does it usually work in USA? if thereīre both options, whatīs the best for a roadtrip?

i believe that itīs possible to rent a car in one town and give it back in other one. am i wrong?

    Default How It Works

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

There are different rental schemes in the US as well, but in general cars rent for specified stretches of time, a few days, a couple of weeks, whatever. The standard rental comes with 'unlimited miles' so that you don't pay more for driving farther, but you do have to be very careful and read the contract closely. Sometimes the miles may not be limited, but where you can go will be, for example not out of the state that you rent in and neighboring states. You can rent in one city and return in another, but there will be a hefty charge for this, several hundred dollars usually. It also matters where you rent from. Not only will the company charge more in certain locations, especially those with very few renters, but local governments love to add substantial taxes, on the theory that the renters tend to be visitors who don't vote in local elections.

So, you've got your work cut out for you in looking for a car rental that suits your needs and budget, but you can start by using our Car Rental Search Tool, and don't forget to read the fine print when you find a deal!
