  1. Default Phoenix, AZ to Mount Rushmore

Hello, This is my first post.

We are a family of five (people that is), not including pets. I have a 14, going on 12, and 9 year old. We are planning a road trip to Mount Rushmore from Phoenix. We plan on leaving around July 20th. Can anyone give me an ideas? Lodging, must see sites, camping?, time it takes, etc.

It is our first "real" roadtrip, except for Disneyland and San Diego. Any help you could offer I would appreciate.

    Default options, options, options

Almost too many options to list.

Depending on the time you have available you could take the fast route (I-40 to I-25 and on north through Colorado Springs, Denver and Cheyenne) and miss all of northern Arizona, Utah and the mountains of Colorado, or you can take the slow route that could include lots of stuff like the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef National Park, Arches National Park, Colorado National Monument, Dinosaur National Monument, Rocky Mountain National Park, Durango to Silverton Steam RR, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Flaming Gorge, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Fort Laramie National Historic Park, to list a few of the possibilities. But seeing them and the other notable places along the way takes a lot of time.

The fast route I mentioned first is about 1,300 miles (19 hours of driving) so if you only have two weeks you won't get to see too much along the way because there is so much to see in the Mt. Rushmore/Black Hills area. Let us know what your time-frame is and we can probably make some good suggestions.

We are planning 10 to 14 days. I was going to take the 1300 mi route. We have seen most of Northern, AZ. I do want to experience as much as possible in the states that we pass through. I will be doing the majority of the driving and have no problem with driving for long periods of time. I know that I definitely want to take us through Bear Country and Yellowstone. There are so many options. I want to make sure I make the right choices.

I have been looking at different camping options. Has anyone stayed at any KOA cabins?
