I'm in the midst of planning a cross-country trip this summer (late May - early June) from New York to SoCal over a period of 2 weeks. At this point, I have a fairly good idea of the route as well as stops along the way. The plan thus far is,
NY - Denver, direct, visit Rocky Mountain NP
I-70 to Moab, Arches NP, Canyonlands
Moab - Ely, NV - Yosemite NP
Yosemite - San Francisco
PCH to LA
Would like to mix up some nights at nice hotels with budget motels(Super 8). The stops where we would like to spend 1-2 nights at more upscale places (lodges, nice hotels) are: Rocky Mountain NP, Moab, Yosemite, San Francisco and Big Sur.
I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on worthwhile places to stay based on experience, or otherwise on any particularly nice drives/sights along the way. Like I said, I have a pretty good idea of the overall picture, I just thought it would be interesting to see what the 'avid roadtrippers' here could share.
Will try to make the drive before the rockies in 3 days so we can have more time to spend around the west.
Thanks for your suggestions!
