  1. Default San Francisco to Las Vegas in April

We are driving from San Francisco to Vegas in mid April with time for only a one night stopover on the way. We want to make the most of the drive and see as much as we can possibly taking in Yosemite and would welcome advice on where it would be best to stay overnight and also the best route to take.

Default Make the Most of What You Have

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

While you can get into Yosemite from the west (San Francisco) side, the road over Tioga Pass to the east will still be snowbound in April, so you will have to exit Yosemite to the south towards Bakersfield before turning east to Las Vegas. In order to maximize your time in Yosemite, you should plan on staying overnight in or around Fresno, as it is the first moderately sizeable city on your way south out of Yosemite. That would then leave you a drive of about 400 miles on the second day to get to Las Vegas.

Your overall route, then, would be I-580 and I-205, then CA-120 to Yosemite. Leave Yosemite on CA-41 south to Fresno where you join CA-99 south to Bakersfield, then CA-58 east to Barstow, and finally I-15 into Las Vegas.
