  1. Default Chicago to San Diego - Best Winter Route

Returning home from school for the holidays and it's my first drive. Not interested in any sightseeing - just the quickests/safest route. Looking for advice on the I70/I15 route vs. a more southerly route. Recommendations / advice appreciated.

    Default General Advice

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Chicago to So Cal is a popular topic today. I just gave some advice to another traveler heading the same way in this thread.

You can read the details of my advice there, but I'll give you a quick summary. This time of year any of the major cross country routes can see winter weather, but there is no way of knowing what the weather will be until just a few days out. The fastest and shortest route is usually the best option, but watching the forecasts and looking for alternate routes to avoid storms is a good idea. One nice thing about the Chicago to So Cal trip is that the 3 major routes (I-80, I-70, and I-40) are all roughly the same distance, so there isn't a major detour if it is snowing in one part of the country, but clear in another.

    Good luck!
