My family and I are taking a trip across country. We'll be traveling from July 28th to Aug 20th. We'll be away for 23 days. We're starting in Maine and planning to stop in the following locations:
Canton & Cleveland, OH (Football Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame),
Detroit, Michigan (Henry Ford Museum),
Winterset, Iowa (Covered Bridges and John Wayne Birth place),
Rapid City, S. Dakota (Mt. Rushmore & Crazy Horse Mem.),
Dever & Colorado Springs,Colorado (Rocky Mtn N.P.-Trail Ridge Rd, Molly Brown's House, Buffalo Bill's Grave & Manitou Cliff Dwellings),
Grand Canyon & Flagstaff, Arizona, (We're thinking the North Rim.)
Amarillo, Texas (Cadillac Ranch & Livestock Auction),
Mansfield & St. Louis, Missouri (Laura Ingall's Wilder's home, Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo),
Hershey & Philadelphia, PA (Hershey's Chocolate Tour, Eagles Stadium, & Betsy Ross Home)
Our children are 13 & 15 yrs old. When we first started planning the trip we thought that we'd rent an RV, however, considering the price of RV's and the cost of fuel we've since decided to pack up our Caravan and try to cut costs.
We've checked into hotels and found that the cost will be approximately $1700. We've selected hotels with free breakfast and a swimming pool for the kids. There are less expensive hotels, but, we're concerned about cleanliness. We're planning to take a cooler and eat out for lunch each day. I originally thought it would be great to try and tent some nights to save a little more $. My husband is concerned with the weather (extremely hot or rain). We aren't familiar with the weather in the midwest Tornadoes/Hurricaines.....
Should we arrange for our hotel rooms in advance or leave it up to chance to find a reasonably priced, clean hotel? How can you be sure you're staying in a respectable place?
I'd appreciate any insight.
