  1. Default San Francisco to Washington D.C.

I'm driving from San Francisco to Washington D.C. with a very old/injured dog in about 3 weeks. I had planned to fly him but he injured the tendons in his 2 back legs recently so flying is out of the question as he is large and cannot be crated for a long period of time. Any suggestions on route/stops? I am panicking...any suggestions would be appreciated!

The crate might still be the best way for him to travel -- even in the car. If not in a crate, then be sure he is buckled into a dog seat-belt harness. I found that dog's nearly always prefer the appearance of enclosure -- they may appear to chafe against it, but they also like the "held-in" feeling. Here are some tips about road trip traveling with a dog. Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum!

The quickest route is I-80 across the country. There are many, many places that cater to dogs and their owners these days. How big a dog is he?

Most motels prefer to cater to critters in the 25 to 35 pound size, so it would be a good idea to telephone ahead to confirm places you can stay. PetFriendly might be a good place to start.

    Good luck!
