Advice for NY - LA

I'm planning a trip from NYC to LA this June. We plan on giving ourselves about two weeks to get there, and want some advice on the best route to take (interesting sights, cities, etc). We've heard recommendations for both the northern route (e.g. go through Colorado and go whitewater rafting) and the southern route (e.g. see Graceland). What do you think?

Which sounds better to you, Graceland or Whitewater rafting?

There are a lot of great things about any of the possible routes you could take, it just kind of depends upon what sort of things you are interested in.

And of course, if this is a round trip, you've always got the option of going there one way, and coming back on a different route.
