You're probably already aware Mark, but this route used to known as Mt Evans scenic route and is the highest paved route in the USA.

The map displays and gives a good idea of your plan, but it is 'clunky'. Not long to go now, and a lot to look forward too! Have fun!

I have never needed one, but we haven't visited for over 4 years. YIKES!! Could it be that it's for non English licences for translation purposes? Best to check with Avis though.

All 3 are good options. Kings canyon and Sequoia NP are pretty spectacular, as are all National parks, and IMO would make a great addition to the trip. (Would be my preferred option) One other option...
