I've enjoyed road tripping through the Sandhills of Nebraska numerous times. During the summer months it is like driving through a never ending gold course.

Dixon is a fun town. It was a small-scale memorial arch. Every summer Dixon holds the annual Petunia Festival and during the summer many of the streets in Dixon are lined with petunias.

Twentynine Palms is an "oasis of murals", so be sure to allocate some time to do some mural exploring when in town. The murals in Twentynine Palms are huge and plentiful.
I think a visit to White Sands National Monument is an absolute must if in the area. Great place for families to play on brilliant white sand dunes.
Tucumcari is a great place to spend a night. Outstanding murals are found all over town and it has lots of old buildings. "Tucumcari tonight" sounds good to me!
I've stayed in Silver City a couple of times and it is a fun town to visit. Silver City is the home to the Big Ditch Park, which is a nice park even though it's a ditch.
Gallup has lots of great murals and cool old buildings. We enjoyed staying and dining at the historic El Rancho Hotel located on Route 66. The best way to appreciate Gallup is to park the car and...
During the summer of 2011, my son and I had tasty Mexican food at the Comet II Drive In & Restaurant located at 1257 Historic Route 66 in Santa Rosa. We both left the restaurant happy and full.
The Billy the Kid Museum was fun, but I would not take a long detour to visit Fort Sumner. If driving US Hwy-60 across New Mexico, then this is a definite stop.
I can vouch for New Mexico State Hwy. 61 being a 20-mile scenic drive. In addition, the City of Rocks State Park is lots of fun.
Amtrak's Southwest Chief eastbound/westbound trains make a daily stop in Las Vegas. The Amtrak station is located near the closed Hotel Castaneda, which was built by Fred Harvey.

The drive on Route 66 between Oatman and Kingman is a scenic and fun drive.
I visited this resort multiple times many years ago. It was an excellent spot. We'd fly Phoenix to Albuquerque and rent a car. I always enjoyed the Albuquerque to Ojo Caliente drive.
