Let's do another scenic road! This one is yet another personal favorite, and there are literally hundreds of reasons why. This road goes by several different names and more than one number.

The dead tree with arrows is what gave it away for me last night using Google but since I've never been I waited. ;)

Correct on all counts! Route 666 originated as an innocent spur off old Route 66, but that number, 666 has a sinister connotation, being the "number of the beast" as specified in the Book of Revelations. People took to calling it "The Devil's Highway," and some folks were nervous about driving on it.

Other folks thought it was cool, so much so that they took to stealing these highway signs as souvenirs:

Between the superstition and the persistent vandalism, the highway department was faced with a never-ending headache, so they simply changed the number of the road to US 191. The Coronado Trail Scenic Byway is that portion of US 191 that runs between Alpine and Morenci through the Blue River Wilderness and the rugged mountains of Eastern Arizona, right along the border with New Mexico. It's one of the twistiest and least traveled of all the U.S. Highways, reputed to have at least 460 switchbacks in 120 miles. Now that's my kind of road!

I thought somebody might pick up on the road sign with the quote from Aldo Leopold and the word "Blue," which leads pretty directly to the Blue River Wilderness. And the other sign I put up, the one with all the "XXX's"? The River and the Campground were faked, but the XXX Ranch is a real place, a rather famous ranch on the Blue River. Either of those would have been easy to find in a search, but I never even stopped to think that the dad-burned arrow tree would be such a giveaway! With all-knowing, all-seeing Google spying on everything, there's no longer any such thing as a secret roadside attraction!

This is the open pit copper mine at Morenci; the world's richest copper mine, in terms of ore production:

Each of these ore haulers, rumbling up out of the pit in a steady stream, is about the size of a two story house!

The Coronado Trail, along with Arizona's White Mountains and the Catwalk Recreation Area in New Mexico, are all part of Scenic Side Trip #3, which is a quite beautiful detour off I-10 between Lordsburg, New Mexico and Willcox, Arizona. If you're ever driving that stretch in the summer, and you'd like to cool off? Take an extra day, and check out the White Mountains and the Coronado Trail!

LOL....I was ready to post on two different locations but both showed up so quickly with a search I didn't even bother! I might have to try cropping more so it's harder to do a search of them!

They have also changed Hwy 666 in New Mexico & Colorado to Hwy 491 for the same "devil number reason" and I have to keep reminding my DH of the change because 666 is what sticks in our minds.

A gold platter to UtahTea!

Yes, the Warner Bros Ranch, not open to the public except by private tours. I was in luck one time and got in on one of those.

First picture - most people recognize it as the fountain on FRIENDS.

Second picture - this church has shown up on several shows, but Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie showed it periodically for one reason or another.

Third picture - house used in several movies.

Fourth picture - house used as Blondie & Dagwood's house in those old movies, as Tony Nelson's house in I Dream of Jeannie.

Fifth picture - it was a familiar house from a more recent TV show that I never watched. Perhaps someone can identify it?

A lot of people "lived" there, but no one really lived there. As a matter of fact, those homes are mostly false fronts. This is what was inside the "Bumstead/Nelson" house:

I'm going back to scenic views and hiking!

The first time we wanted to go to this place it was closed because they were paving the road. Now the road is paved to the hiking trail head and if you go a little farther on a very good gravel road you can have some views without any hiking.


We will start with the hike. This is not a clue because this was totally made up by the four of us that were doing the hike...but that rock that sticks up....we called ET

Ha! I was about to do this place myself, but you beat me to it! You're in Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, just north of Albuquerque in Cochiti Pueblo. You're probably on the Canyon Trail. And I'll bet that the picture you held back looked something like this:

What's the saying about great minds! ;)

Rick was correct and this is Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in New Mexico. We did it as side trips from Santa Fe.

This is the picture I was worried about being identified in a picture search. This is most of the way up the Slot Canyon Trail. We did the steep climb past the point of this picture and were disappointed. This is by far the best view of this hike but still a scramble. We made it up to there the first time but our friends couldn't manage even getting up this far on our second time visiting. We did do the much easier Cave Loop trail with them but I didn't post any pictures of that trail but ET can be seen on both trails.

Those formations are really unique. Relatively soft volcanic tuff that's eroded in a particular peculiar fashion, creating these conical "tents" that are as much as 90 feet tall.

Kudos to you guys for making that hike all the way to the top of the mountain! Your friends shouldn't be embarrassed; a lot of people bail out on that last section of the trail. In my book, I describe it as, "not for the faint of heart!"

I think they are at the overlook to Horseshoe Bend near Page, AZ. My clues are the structure in the first picture above and the electrical wires in the last picture.

If I'm right, they aren't really waiting for a sunrise or sunset but a first light of the Colorado River below and/or rafts on the river below.

Once the sun does drop, you have to act fast to use the last of the daylight.

Horseshoe Bend, along with Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon, are all featured in Scenic Side Trip #13, which runs from St. George, Utah to Flagstaff, connecting Interstate 15 with Interstate 40 by way of some seriously scenic two-lane highways!

I’ve been a few times but I’ve heard that the it’s so crowded now. The first time we went was well before it was discovered and there were no signs. One year we did the float trip one day and the next we went to the overlook just in time to see the rafters go by! Highly recommend the float trip.

Yup, I can remember when you had to know the milepost for the turnoff to Horseshoe Bend, because there was nothing out there but an unmarked dirt track. Now, they get spillover from all those Instagram fans that are flocking to Antelope Canyon, so they've put in a huge paved parking lot to accommodate the big crowds, and there's a $10 per vehicle entrance fee.

Antelope Canyon is another place that was practically unknown until relatively recently. It was nothing but an interesting little side trip for people vacationing on Lake Powell--but not any more! Last year, four million people visited Page, and most of them didn't even bother with the lake; they were there to see Antelope Canyon! It'll be interesting to see how they handle those crowds when they open back up. I'm guessing that won't be happening any time soon.

I was pretty surprised to see a bushy-tailed fox in that particular location, so, feeling a bit like Alice in pursuit of the white rabbit, I chased him up these steps:

When I was living in Washington, I used to get up well before sunrise on Saturday mornings, and I'd drive downtown to the National Mall (I lived just minutes from there, right across the river in Arlington). That whole iconic area, which is jam-packed with tourists and government workers all through the week, is literally deserted on Saturday mornings, so you can park anywhere you please, and you can wander at will. I'd maybe see a jogger or two, but other than that, I had that whole tableau to myself. Each weekend, I'd pick on one of the monuments, and I'd take at least 100 photos in that wonderful early morning light. My personal version of the "Dawn Patrol," an exercise that resulted in quite a few beautiful images.

Wow...that must have been nice to have it to yourself!

I had a friend from the 5th grade when we lived in Texas and she move that next year to Maryland and a few years later my family moved back to California but over all those years we kept in touch. It's not like nowadays! Even then long distance phone calls cost too much so we did it the old fashion way and wrote letters and sent pictures on occasions. So when DH, myself and our two sons were going to finally made a trip to the East Coast back in 1990 my friend insisted we park our 24 ft trailer at her house and she would be our DC tour guide for three days. She did a fantastic job of it too. That year was the year that the Jefferson Monument was covered with scaffolding but it was still recognizable and I recognized your picture instantly!

LOL...that same year that we did Washington, DC (1990) we also took the boys to see Appomattox Court House National Historical Park in Virginia. For some reason that beautiful white house stick out more in my mind than the actual court house!

I agree, the "court house" is pretty forgettable. Historically significant, but not likely to leave many other impressions on casual visitors.

It isn't like any I've seen so I had to Google it and of course I found it. I take it you guys keep picking this same area because you know I've NEVER been! LOL!

Hummm...what clues can I give to prove I had the right answer and maybe help someone else come up with the answer!

It's the oldest intact European structure in the state and a National Historic Landmark. It was hit by an earthquake in 1887 and the west tower was hit by lighting in 1939.

You are, of course, both correct. Sometimes known as the White Dove of the Desert, the church you can see today has been there since 1797, and it's still in use.

It's located right on the edge of Tucson, and it's definitely worth a stop.

We were just there the first week of March of this year for nine nights! We didn't stay at this building, we stayed at the nearby campground and had full hook ups. It only took getting up by 6:30 am every day for 8 days to be online to get one of the only 18 full hook up spots at this location 6 months in advance!

The palm leaf on the door was the clincher! So immediately behind the photographer is a stone fountain...but farther behind is a valley. I'll let others come up with the name of the valley! ;)

It's had a couple of names over the last four decades. What is the current name of this resort and how long has it had this "newer" name?

On my photos - yes, it was Appomattox Court House area. If I posted the actual "Court house", it's easily recognizable since every TV show and book that talks about Lee's surrender, shows the actual courthouse. So I picked other places.

I was going to guess San Xavier del Bac in Tucson, but I'm a little late getting to RTA. I'm currently "on the road" and was spending time with family.
