Las vegas - Albuquerque March 2012
Evening All
After some information about our forthcoming trip, Fly into vegas on the 21st march 2012, staying 4 nights, then planning on driving to Williams via Hoover dam, staying one night in Williams, following day take the train to the grand canyon, full day in GC and had planned to stay the night in Flagstaff.
This will take us to the 27th March, we have a flight booked from Albuquerque to Miami on the 30th thus giving us 3 nights to explore the surrounding area, our main concern is weather conditions but would love to do some kind of circular route taking in Monument valley.
Any recommendations, tips, maps, driving time etc would be very much appreciated
Regards Andy
And a little further along.
Adding to what Southwest Dave has posted, after Durango, with that lovely train, and Pagosa with the hot springs, my goodness they are hot! you could continue on along scenic route 160, over Wolf Creek Pass. Pass through Alimosa and some 18 miles further on take 150 into Great Sand Dunes NP, one of the lesser visited, but none the less a great NP.
At Fort Garland take 159 south to Albuquerque, through San Luis where there is a magnificent life size Way of the Cross going all the way up the hill to the chapel at the top; through Taos, and the bridge over the Rio Grand; Sante Fe, with its many attractions, including the Basilica and the Miraculous Staircase; and then onto Albuquerque.
But you won't want to do all that, on one day.
Lifey
To catch a sunset without missing much else.
The Cameron trading post is pretty cool, although a little touristy. Good food and a massive store[s] will keep you occupied if you have time to spare. I'm not sure what the rooms are like as we stayed in the RV park, but enjoyed it as an overnight stop.
When you get to the GC you could explore the viewpoints around the village area and up to Hermits rest to the west. To catch a sunset and not miss too many other viewpoints after dark, [while not having to back track] you would have to make your way along Desert view drive and witness the sunset closer to the east kiosk. Lipan point is a popular choice or you could make your way to the Desert view viewpoint and the Watchtower, which is the last one in the NP. I think the sunset would be around 6.30pm in March and you would be under an hour away from Cameron starting from Desert view.
I'm trying think where that can be
I've eaten at the cafe a few times, and I like the location of the lodge. 1/2 mile from the main check-in desk? Is this the home up against the bluff? I think it is much closer to the 1000 yards -- it's a bit of climb -- if you're walking, but there are paved roads right up to it. Wow, no I think this sounds pretty good.
What is the address of the house? If it really is 1/2 mile from the main lodge, walking is probably going to see like a serious trek. It's reasonably vertical in all directions from the lodge!
If you go the RTA Map Center page and put in Goulding's Lodge as the Keyword search, you'll see a short write-up about this location
Mark
Goulding's Lodge, Monument Valley.
The property away from the main lodge sounds like the accommodation we stayed in a year or two back. You leave reception in the main lodge, back down (2/3 hundred yards) to the T junction, left for about ½ mile along the good paved road.
On the right hand side, in a small cul-de-sac, are about half a dozen detached and attached flat like properties with kitchens, bathrooms bedrooms etc. Good for families.
The only downside is they are under a highish bluff which cuts out any views of the Valley.
Found no problem driving up to the main lodge for facilities and meals etc. The restaurant has good views across Monument Valley.
