"Where in North America?" --- Section IV
This is the Fourth section of a popular mind puzzle first brought to the membership by member Quebec Gen.
General Rules of the "Where in North America is this?" Game
1) Anyone can play -- just follow along and test your mettle about places found in North America.
2) You'll need to be a registered member of this Forum if you want to contribute your own photographs and/or participate in the discussion for each place.
3) You will need to have the ownership or usage rights to any photo that you post on this forum, as per the terms & conditions of Federal copyright law. If you post a photo that you do not own the rights to, Forum Management reserves the right to remove it. As a matter of practical use, we would expect that you would be posting only those photos that you or a close family member have taken.
4) Every photo of a mystery place needs to be unique in some way -- And there should be "visual clues" in the photo to enable us to solve where the mystery location is...
(Inactive -- you can look, but not enter new posts!)

Santa Barbara Mission Sanctuary
A similar photo found about 2/3rds of the way down this page.... Megan Edwards gets the credit for identifying this one....
Let's go back outside again
What is that? Where is it?

Yep! "Old Perpetual Geyser"
Yeah, you're getting wise to the notion that I might be using images from places profiled on RTA.... This is known as "Old Perpetual Geyser" in Lakeview, Oregon and it shoots a plume of hot water into the air about every 90 seconds or so. In the wintertime it's pretty darn neat -- goes about 60 feet in the air and the hot water crystalizes as it falls back to earth if it's cold enough!
Mark
Actually.... fell across it
I figured if it isn't CA or WY, then the most likely place for a geyser in NAM is someone along the "ring of fire"; started in Oregon first... and there you were!
Try this one. These lovely gardens are part of a triple-threat attraction.
What is it, where, and what are the other two things this place is known for (aside from the gardens)?

Unless someone surprises me, you WILL need clues!

Arrrrrrrrgh. The presence of a window is surprising and takes out my first guess of a certain location in the Nevada desert....
Mark
Is it an exhibit at the Smithsonian?
Your clues are mighty vexing -- I really have to go back to work.... but perhaps at the Air and Space Museum? Perhaps even a mock-up of a fire control room on a destroyer?
At least I was headed for the right zone
I got the references -- and figured it had to do something with a naval vessel -- good one again!
Mark
Speaking of taking the gloves off....
There are some visual clues here... but I bet this one will be a toughie....

Where is this? Why would we care?
Hint #1 -- And a further riddle
It is California, and that is the front entrance... but just about everyone enters the property these days from the rear... If this were an auditory image, you would hear sea gulls and the crashing of surf....And did I mention that this one is a toughie....? The house was built in 1929...
Mark
Yeah, the seashore hints did you in: thanks!
Once you opened that up then a simple cruise over likely spots (La Jolla, OC Coast, Catalina Island, etc) w/ Google Earth turned it up.
Had earlier "found" it searching "Spanish Colonial" architecture, but the pictures were all of the other side of the building (and the date given was 1930), so missed it initially.
I am getting poised to be really annoying; in cleaning up my "man cave" (the spare bedroom Linda allows me to trash with my stuff) I'm getting phase I and II of my photo habit under control:
Phase Ia - film (primarily slide: 10-15 years)
Phase Ib - film (primaily negative/print: 15-20 years)
Phase II - film but with digital CDs (5 years approx)
Phase III - digital (last 5 years)
I think I've only used one Phase I (tear gas in Berkeley) and a small number of Phase II shots (St. Paul Island) up to now, in a few days the universe of possibilities will expand as I get the Phase II CDs migrated to my hard drive and start scanning in more of the older stuff (as time/inclination permits)
We're all gonna benefit from that!
Don,
Looking forward to see what gems are lurking in your photo collections!
Mark
In the meantime, here is a little distraction -- I haven't made it out there yet to capture my own update in photos -- but you gotta look at this web cam... From this perspective it looks like the arch is already connected -- it's not, but getting closer every day!
The Cam updates every couple of minutes and so you can see workers moving around!
Anything strike you as "odd" about this locale?
Since we've enjoyed so many of Gerald "Mr RoadTrip Thurman's photos, I thought we ought to feature one of his "self portraits' again...

Where could Gerald be sitting to get this photo? (Look at the water color...)

Then I would have to guess...
... somewhere on the eastern shore of Salton Sea, in the Desert Beach area.
