Fall Foliage Report

Since we have that kind of thread each year where we compare the state of fall foliage in every corner of North America, I thought I might start it this time. We had some very cold temperature 2 weeks ago and it felt like autumn already. Some leafy trees already started to turn red! I was kind of stunned since it usually doesn't start until mid-September at least but I guess summers in Quebec City are not as long as in the Eastern Townships or New England.

A few days ago I went to Pohenegamook which is on the northwestern border of Maine and I saw bunches of colourful leafy trees through the green ones.

Anything special in your area yet?

Fall has started here in Las Vegas as well. We can tell because the temperature at midnight is only about 85 degrees F. Daytime temps continue to stroll past 100 degrees most days....

Due to a slight but still irritating medical issue, I haven't been able to leave town recently to check the local canyons, but the cottonwoods are beginning to change to yellow and so have some of the other hardwood species around town.

One of my favorite towns for fall color in the west is the capital city of Nevada. Yep, Carson City boasts just about every form of hardwood tree that grows in the Americas and swirling leaves make this a Fall wonderland of color each Autumn.

Seriously, we've had a couple of days in a row into the high 70's/lower 80's. That's about as good as it's gotten this year so I hope it hangs on for awhile.

Fall schmall. I'm not ready for it yet. I'm not gonna let it happen. :-)

It's still up into the mid 90s every day here. Finally cool enough I can break out my non air conditioned car, but definitely not fall. Unfortunately we really don't even get fall around here. It tends to stay into the 80s for a long time and then suddenly it turns colder and everything dies. I think we get the whole leaf turning thing for only about 2 weeks. Also - there are so many pine trees around here that it's often not that obvious that fall has arrived.

I chose other - the Ozarks are amazing during the fall. I've got to find a way to get up there this year.

It's getting colder and colder here. It's 53 right now:oP Next Saturday, during class, we're supposed to drive to the North Shore and all the way to the Lake St. Jean area. I bet the leaves have already started to fall down up there along the Saguenay fjord. I'll try my best to take some pictures although we cannot always stop where we'd like to with those big rigs. So Laura, Judy and Mark, enjoy the sun and warmth for me!! By November I should be ready to hit the road again and hopefully have lots of southern and western trips to do.

Phew - where did that Summer go?

I noticed the leaves starting to change about a month ago, using my neighbors maple as a guide - this particular tree has been the first to change in the neighborhood for at least the past four years. That tree is showing orange, but I don't know how bright the colors will be, since it has been a somewhat dry Summer. Yet, we're not seeing a drought because the rain that has fallen has come down in copious quantities in short periods of time.

Today, in fact, is the first time in quite awhile I can recall it raining all day.

It also hasn't been a hot Summer for us by any stretch.

Local news channel provided a link and telephone number to find out about fall colors in Arkansas. Do any other states do this ?

If you get out into the northwest part of Illinois near the Mississippi River with all those hills,valleys, and bluffs, you will get an eyeful.

Plus, there is that stretch in Indiana from Columbus to Bloomington along Indiana Hwy- 46 has got to be remarkable (I've only seen it in the spring).

Then there is Geneva Lake in southern Wisconsin. The south shore is jaw-dropping when those trees go gold. Plus, a drive through the town of Lake Geneva is a real trip of color.

Fall is certainly on its way. I was driving on I-94 between Minneapolis and Eau Claire, WI last week and that stretch of road is getting to be quite nice, with lots of color.

I also drove up the Wisconsin side of the River Road from I-90 to where the Mississippi completely enters Minnesota. Its always a nice drive, but I'd say the great color on that stretch was still a week or two away.

Gah - this is the time of year I wish I could just temporarily move a little further north and get that feeling of fall for once in my life. Hmm - maybe if I ever get a job that doesn't have a busy season from October through April/May I'll do a fall roadtrip.

Where I live we have few deciduous trees so any color we have is basically a couple trees here, one tree there. But I just got back from a meeting in Wenatchee, WA, and once I got over Snoqualmie Pass to the east side and got onto 970/97, the colors were eye-popping. I would guess that it's at its peak through there, or close to it. Every leaf was a bright and beautiful, the trees were full of leaves, and there were few leaves on the ground. Since my experience with nature's display is fairly limited, I don't know how long this lasts before the leaves fall, but I would suggest any PNW folks who want to enjoy it, get there soon.

I just thought that I would share with everyone on here how the colors of Autumn are shaping up this year.

So far in my hometown, the colors have started to turn, with some nice oranges appearing here and there. However, in the Worcester area, changes are slow and on my usual routes, I have not seen anything dramatic nor spectacular.

We are getting our first significant rain in quite some time this week. Hopefully it will last for awhile to give the rivers back their life. The river in my town is so low that you could almost lay down in its bed and not get wet. Along with that comes the cooler weather - most of the area was in the mid- to high-80s towards the end of last week.

It seems to be a trend the past couple of years that the colors are coming out later than normal.

Remember I told you a few weeks ago that Fall had begun here? Well, the last few weeks have probably been warmer and sunnier than the whole month of July! Pretty much the leaves stuck to the trees, yay!! It is beautiful around here (Quebec City), the leaves are just starting to fall. As for the Eastern Townships, the leaves are starting to get more colourful.

I'm doing a road trip to the Lower St. Lawrence, North Shore and New England next week so I'll be able to tell you more.

The weather is surreal here this year. I'd thought we were the only ones (two months of rain in June and July, floods, the lot followed by a week of heat (whilst I was out of the country!) a month of cold and dark and now, finally, lovely mild days instead of the winter closing in as it should be) bu Judy reports strange weather patterns and now Gen too. It's very, very odd and it's no wonder the leaves don't know when to fall off. Some of our trees actually shed their leaves in July! :s
