Tioga Pass Closure --- Prognosticator

Since, we did such a good job with the opening of the pass last Spring, I thought I would try a new poll on when the famous route over the Sierra Nevada Mountains will close this year.

The Tioga Road opened for the 2006 season on Saturday, June 17th

Last year the Tioga Road closed for the 2005 season on November 25th

If you manage to choose the correct day (gotta identify it in a post below) I will purchase a tank of gas for you. (The post has to be made a minimum of 15 days prior to the closing date).

Plus, I encourage anyone wishing information about the other six passes to post intel here.

Well not sure if it's any indication but at least one of the roads in Yellowstone has been closed for the season today. We've been snowed out!

Closed now?

Tioga Pass is closed today due to snow but I am unable to determine if this a temporary closure or the real deal. Does anyone know? It has already been closed a couple of times this season (snow) and re-opened.

Officially it is still "open"

I just checked and although the road is still blocked, officially it is still "open" Here is the official opening and closing dates for the past few years.

Checked on 11/20/06 and it is all the way open again today -- so no "winners" yet!

The Annual "Wait and See" Period

Tioga Pass is still open. If you are planning to drive it this week, be sure to check on the official California DOT report page here. Or you can call the hotline (this is a voice mail system -- takes a little while to get through the menu -- but the information is kept current): 209-372-0200

Thus far, Brad, Joel, Memetu and Findapath on still in the running for that tank of fuel...

Officially Closed for the Season

Winter's blanket of snow has arrived in the Yosemite NP high country. Tioga Pass is officially closed. I haven't seen it on any NPS documentation, but the good folks at the Mono Lake Committee, who have monitored and provided this data for years have decreed that the Official Date was November 26, 2006 -- one day later than in 2005!

Update: 04-08-07 According to the official NPS site, it was closed on the 27th, but I know for sure that the gates were closed on the 26th....
