I would be looking at the Cambria/Cayacus area to give you plenty of time around Big Sur for stopping and enjoying the scenery and parks. I have no personal experience of a particular place to recommend to stay.

thanks - weren't for cambria and I'm so pleased. What a lovely place. We stayed at the best western fireside inn (really warm outsidepool and jacuzzi)and it is great, right of the ocean front. There's a lovely boardwalk for viewing and lots of squirrels and rabbits come running up looking for food. The town itself is quaint, lots of galleries etc and loads of places to eat. I would certainly recommend cambria. It seems much better that cayocus.
The kids are looking for a date early tomorrow to feed the squirrels!
