I was sorta guessing it was in Ohio and have been looking at various bridges, I'd noticed the railroad bed -- but it didn't look in use. A river runs nearby eh? In Ohio -- well, there can't be more than 500 such places.... in Ohio.

It is the support structure for I-271 in Boston, Ohio, in Cuyahoga National Park. In the background is the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail. Directly South of this location is the I-80 bridge, which I also found somewhat interesting (though not as distinct as the I-271 supports):

Wow, that second image is gorgeous! You really didn't need to give it up so early, I was stumped, but I bet some of our other roadtripping brethren would've figured it out soon. Again, what a neat, neat, bridge!

My first thought was somewhere in Maine, maybe along the Kennebec or Androscoggin Rivers. But west of the Rockies? Somewhere on the upper Columbia or one of its tributaries in the Spokane region? Perhaps Little Falls?

It's certainly west of the Rockies and north of the Sierras and it is in the Columbia River drainage basin, but it's not the Columbia River. The river was designated as an American Heritage River in 1997.

Well, that would make it the Willamette, then. Oddly enough that's the only American Heritage River (besides the Hanalei in Hawaii) that drains into the Pacific. But I can't place the dam.

Willamette Falls, between West Linn on one side and Oregon City on the other.
I205 should be running halfway down that ridge on the far side of the river.
