Are we in KS, Toto?
Excellent deductive powers.... except my geographic sense has deserted me again... you need to bend your attention northwards on a par with Chicago instead of St. Louis... (you'd think I'd have a better sense of place after this many decades of doing this....)
And the rocks are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and in the Nebraska Natural Areas Register.
Those are the Courthouse and Jail Rocks outside Bridgeport NE. They were landmarks along several trails.
Yep, despite my geographic-challenged state of mind, you got it!
"Located just 2 miles south of Bridgeport Nebraska on State hwy 88 - near the Bridgeport Golf Course.
Courthouse and Jail Rocks are two of the most famous landmarks of the mid 1800's westward migration. Nearby is the Oregon-California Trail, the Mormon Trail, the Pony Express Trail and the Sidney-Deadwood Trail. The rocks were vanguards of the unforgettable scenic wonders that travelers would encounter farther west on the trails, including Chimney Rock and the rugged Scott's Bluffs...." read more here.
I thought it was high time we ran another bronze statue past the assembled road trip lore wizards of this Forum....
I love the action in this depiction -- even his cowboy hat is falling off....
What town is this located in? When was it created? Who was the artist?
(Actually, I don't know the answers about the artist or when it was built, but I'd like to know so we can feature it elsewhere on the site...)

Ahhh, Grasshopper, I'm a learned-by-the-seat-of-pants-on-mouse kind of Web publisher and I've made more mistakes than there is documentation. I really like that </sarcasm> tag -- I've to share that with some of my editorial colleagues! ...And by the way, this statue location is A LOT closer to Kansas than the last one was...
One of my favourite spots in the US. I visited that place during my very first long US solo road trip in 2003 or 2004!
Can anyone tell me where this is and what is the name of this installation?

Really, really, big salmon. Salmon that can leap 10 meters or more in a single bound....
Seriously, that looks like flood chute downstream from a dam/power plant but I've never seen tiers that high before. Is this in the United States?
Mark
It's part of Hydro-Québec.
AZBuck
But, I agree, it is part of Hydro-Québec, but I still wonder about why that was built that way.
Resurrecting my last puzzle entry...
http://www.roadtripamerica.com/blog/...y-Mark-088.jpg
(photo by Gerald Thurman) and the clue that it is VERY close to Kansas....
How about the Robert-Bourassa Generating Facility located at James Bay?
Reputed to be the largest generation site in North America. The Dam face is 530 tall and has it's own "Giant's Staircase" for those ENORMOUS salmon I was referring to earlier. Here's a view taken from the dam looking down at those stairs...
It also an underground power station where the various parts of the generation plant were hewn from solid rock -- personally I can't imagine how this works... Maybe Gen can explain it to us?
Mark
Hehe, there may be giant salmon in there but mostly trout and John Dory are fished there. In fact, on the day I took that picture I ate a meal of delicious John Dory fished the day before right at the bottom of those very steps by the lady who offered me a tour of the facility (I'll post a little write-up later in the Reports section). The fish are most likely to go down the stairs then climb them. The Giant's Staircase is actually a spillway for the Robert-Bourassa hydroelectric facility (formerly LG-2 - LG stands for La Grande, the name of the River that was diverted for the project). If the water on the other side of the dam
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2519/...7229dfeaf0.jpg
gets too high, the gates open
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2543/...0ab2e24d73.jpg
and the water flows into the staircase and eventually into the La Grande River below. If major spills occur, the water can take up to 20 minutes before it reaches the river! Indeed, the staircase counts 10 steps each the size of 2 football fields!

This facility has a capacity of 7,722 MW that covers all the Province and even some north eastern States. So you guys profit from it too! The entrance to the facility consists of a huge door cut directly through the rock
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3566/...c2e2ae55ed.jpg
and the generators are located underground, under thick layers of million-year old rocks. Most of the infrastructure including the Spillway and the by-pass tunnels,
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3584/...f5eb3c1d99.jpg
was cut through the Canadian Shield, that's why they had to use a lot of dynamite. Needless to say sismic activity is monitored on a daily basis there.
The complex is located just north of the Town of Radisson, QC and was built in the mid 1970's. Dubbed the "Project of the Century", it brought controversy and despair among the Cree communities in that area, some of whom had to move elsewhere because of the flood threat coming from the methods used by Hydro-Quebec (drying up rivers and diverting them). Some agreements were signed, but still, for many the situation remains an unsatisfactory one.
I really like the photo of the big red door -- it looks very NORAD!
Thanks for the extra information!

The town is midway between Holly and Hasty... (it's a dumb clue, I know, but how often is such a situation like to arise?)

I can’t find much information about the statue, but it’s located in Lamar, Colorado. (birthplace of the late Ken Curtis.)
Looking for an excuse to post this, as it can't be used in this game.
For the horse-statue-lovers in the crowd: "King" Wenceslas riding his horse in a rather unique manner. Statue is in a mall off Wenceslas Square (which is actually rectangular) in Prague.

A snow shot.
Where is this?

Aside: I can't believe I've been using Capture NX 2 for post-processing almost exclusively for over two years and I JUST NOW discovered the control to correct perspective; "distortion control". RTM
...but perhaps more helpfully, at the subject location: per www.weather.com, it is now 74 degrees and partly cloudy , with 8 mph winds from the WSW.
Oh yeah, it's also almost exactly 4 hours to sunset there as I type this.
I know I asked for this but... I really didn't intend to have to THINK about this today. OK four hours to sunset ought to give me the longitude and the temperature is very curious....
So it's somewhere south of Montreal, perhaps New York, NH, arrrrrrrrrrgh
Mark
Reading the isometric charts -- I was thinking Concord, NH -- temps about right, but the wind direction is wrong... shifting the focus...
Now the Boston area is looking pretty solid -- but it could be further west a bit...
Hasn't the sun already set in Beantown?
Go west, young man!
Also, don't neglect the impact of microclimates and altitude.
On a hot day there's a 3 degree difference between the floor of the Diablo Valley and a few hundred feet up the hill were I live; could maybe be same thing at this location (hint).
That said, this place normally doesn't need air conditioning, but once upon a time it was really hot in this neighborhood.
ok, sheepishly, moving my attention west
OK, now I am thinking somewhere in the Pacific corridor, but fairly far north to accommodate that time -- oh wait a minute....I had thought it could be the Salish Lodge, but the roof is the wrong color, among some other issues. Same issue with the Mt. Hood Lodge, but getting closer?
... this shot was taken on June 17, 2005.
I haven't accounted for this part of the clue yet....
I'm not positive how this fits the temperature differential clue -- but it sure looks like a dead ringer for the Crater Lake Lodge!
Crater Lake Lodge in late spring. They get a lot of snow. We were up visiting Linda's aunt and uncle in the Medford area, with a couple of Chigago-area relatives in tow. Road to rim had JUST barely opened, but weather was bad, couldn't see much so we caught lunch in the lodge, then it lifted enough for this:

Crater Lake gets more than 40' of snow a year, on average; over 900" in 1950 (calendar year) and 879" in the 1932-33 snow season.
Let's change things up with an interior.
This now houses artists, formerly it played a role in matters military.
What is it, where is it, and what did it used to be?

The first time I saw Crater Lake was in late May, the road had just been opened -- it was magical.
Very nice photo!
These were taken in May, 1994 -- must have been less snow that year...

This looks like a former army building -- at first I thought there could be such a building in the old San Francisco Presidio but then I remembered the view from the Marin Headlands and there was something about this building (and your clue) that pointed me in this direction. Most of this installation was known as Fort Barry and was more-or-less fully active from 1907 to 1972. More information about the current exhibits can be found here.

New bridge at Hoover Dam.
Thought this picture worth sharing but didn’t know where to put it. So here it goes. Courtesy of our UK paper the Mail Online. Looks like the bypass bridge will be open next year.
The view will be spectacular from the much higher level.
Can't wait to see it for myself! Any idea of an opening date? Judging by the progress since I was there the Sagrada Familia will likely be finished first!
Wrong side of the country.
Here's another clue: when Farragut uttered his immortal line, he wasn't talking about what used to be made here; those things weren't invented yet. The name he used we now use to refer to another type of object, but one with the same ultimate objective.
P.S. Megan's shots are beautiful! I'm not happy with that shot of mine, a 5 shot panorama stitched together in Photoshop; the seams are still visible. May spend more time later on it. I love the reflections she got in hers.
That is the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria VA.
