Dave, I like the resident "geezer" sitting in front. Very authentic!

And since we seem to be on the novelty kick for now...
I am pretty sure Rick has a couple photos of this place too. This was captured by Peter Thody in August 2010:

Bruce Jones captured this in April 2011 -- at the famous Tehachapi Loop. Isn't this a cool photo?

I'll see your Black Widow Spider, and raise you one nasty Momma bark scorpion, with her brood on her back!
https://www.roadtripamerica.com/blog...V003-00342.jpg
This one isn't my photo--credit goes to Joel Sartore, the brilliant National Geographic photographer responsible for the Photo Ark project, an attempt to document as many of the earth's creatures as possible, before they disappear.
I used to hunt Black Widows at night, at my house in Phoenix, with a flashlight in one hand, and a fly swatter in the other. They build crappy little webs, low to the ground, around house foundations and the like, and they'll eat just about anything that gets caught in it. The ladies produce a big egg sack, and if you don't destroy them before they hatch, you'll have a hundred baby black widows crawling all over the place.
We have scorpions here as well. When I was a kid, my friends and I used to catch them and put them in jars. There was a professor at ASU, a Dr. Stahnke, who needed scorpions for his research into their venom, and he'd pay us two bits apiece for as many as we could bring him. (In case you weren't a kid back in the '50's, at that time, two bits--25 cents--was a lot! Enough to buy you two comic books and a candy bar!) I have to wonder what the Professor would have paid for this lovely specimen? How could you even count those things?
Rick
Rick,
That is an awesome photo of the scorpion. We have a black light flashlight for the purpose of hunting scorpions. They really show up well.

AZBuck, where was that captured? And I guess the headline is another subtle query?
The scale of the flowers would suggest that the statue is only about 2 inches tall?
Thanks,

Mark, As I remember the carving was one of a pair on either side of a gate somewhere in the Cotswolds of England. I believe they were roughly the size of the proverbial 'breadbox'.

Somewhere in our home town
Here in Tucson, people are out walking in shorts and tees today, but there is a neighborhood where each homeowner tries to outdo their neighbors in the lavishness of their displays. The neighborhood gets blocked off each evening and people simply stroll through a winter wonderland. This is actually one of the less ostentatious homes!

These were taken two springs ago, at Picacho Peak State Park, north of Tucson. When there's enough rainfall, at the right time, the mountain comes alive with a blanket of golden poppies (and more). The winter of 2023 was relatively wet, so there was quite the bumper crop that year!

Back in 2019 I traveled the length of the Natchez Trace Parkway. I thought I had posted a report about it but I guess I haven't done that yet.
One of the highlights of the trip was catching the sunset over the Natchez-Vidalia Bridge.
