Loved this report -- I have driven high profile vehicles for many years and KNOW how fatiguing that can get. Someday you should try it in a ground blizzard with 1/8 mile visibility and ice so slick you can stand outside the truck without hanging on to the mirror for stability. Now, that is tiring!Quote:

Hi Don, great report! Welcome to Phoenix (my home town)! Too bad you couldn't have stayed for a few days and had barbecue with me.
I was headed home to Phoenix that same day -- same time. No doubt we passed each other on the road down from Flagstaff -- either you me or I you! I had been up in Utah exploring the beautiful red rock country for a couple of days.
I see Jupiter Pluvius has awarded your children with a baptism of fire here in the Valley of the Sun. We're near record-breaking heat every day since they arrived. How well are they dealing with that? Bob
Mark,, glad you enjoyed the tale.....can't imagine driving under those conditions..I will admit to having a much greater appreciation for all truck drivers... they really are the backbone of the American economy and I tip my hat to all who do it.
Bob.. yeah.. sorry we couldn't have met.. I did stay thru that following Saturday ( my wife had more vac time than me and stayed thru that next Tuesday).. Hopefully in the future , we can arrange something..
As to the kids and the heat.. all I can tell you is that they didn't think it was as bad as everyone wanted to tell them... but you must remember.,, my wife and I were giving the deal of a lifetime and that may have soften any weather issues.. (besides it just the first of many more weeks of 100+ degree days they will "enjoy" ) but the payoff is when I am back here suffering thru another winter and they are relaxing on the back patio....MY BACK PATIO... and calling to tell me that they are grilling dinner tonite

It's true that our heat in the desert southwest isn't usually as uncomfortable as even 90 degrees in more humid climes -- it just isn't as oppressive. But today at 3 pm it was about 114 outside -- and that's hot any way you look at it! It's still over 105 even now at almost 8:00 PM!
But, as you say, it's only 4 months out of the year -- from October through May things are beautiful here. But don't tell anybody! Bob

GMRS radios are the same style, but can have an amplitude LOS range of 6-8 miles. These do require a license, which costs $80 and doesn't require a test. The license lasts for 5 years. I have a GMRS License (WQCL394). The nice thing about GMRS is that it also extends to members of your family, so your spouse, children, even parents, can all use the radios under one license.
GMRS radios are a great alternative to CB's. Although the range is much less, and in some areas traffic varies (some areas have 0 traffic, others are nearly maxed out), they do work well for communicating between vehicles that are traveling together, assuming they don't get too far from each other.
Most GMRS radios are Dual function (so they also have FRS broadcast channels), and cost anywhere from $30 to $50 dollars. Even with the license this can be a much more cost effective means of inner-group communications than CB's.
Personally, I carry both on most trips. Many REACT teams are moving to GMRS/FRS frequencies to monitor because of the rapid licensed and unlicensed use.
