states like iowa, nebraska, colorado, missouri the speed limit is 70 and some are 75 so u could go that fast w/no tickets.
some states have speed limits of 70 or 75. that will help w/no tickets
Hey - I'm probably too late on this forum but a friend of mine just entered the Fireball Run rally. While I agree that One Lap of America is a "legal" event it is also VERY tough- you "really" gotta like motorsports to like "One Lap".
On the other hand if your goal is simply to have fun- Fireball, also a legal event, is modeled off the "Cannonball Run" movie... the whole event is comprised of wacky characters and every kind of vehicle imaginable.
In fact my friend Travis actually owns the "Ambulance" used in the Cannonball Run movie- he entered it into the Fireball. The zanyness of the event sounds cool and I wish I had the 9 days to go but I'll just wait for the pictures. There is an award for the "peoples favorite" so if you as so compelled go vote for The Ambulance team at the Fireball Run web site.
Thanks and if anyone else has entered this event let me know and I'll connect you to Travis.
Cheers- RLT
My cousin is a deputy sheriff and advised that 5 miles over the limit won't get you a ticket even with radar. I tested it on a long trip last year and kept my cruise control at +5. I passed at least 6 troopers with radar guns, and none of them stopped me. Also, keep in mind that the posted speed in a lot of the western states is 70-75 mph, so you can really fly there if you need to make up time.
I'd recommend I-80, I-76, I-70, I-44, I-40, I-15, I-10. The only place you'll have long stretches without gas stations is in California, and even there, it isn't as bad as it was twenty years ago when Needles was the last gas for 120 miles at Barstow. There are one or two stations between those towns now.
Thanks for the input but this thread is over 3 years old. ;-)
I think you could sit a little over the limit on Interstate and highways but I don't know about going 5mph over the limit in a 25mph zone, plus I have read some stories that contradict that and some out of State people have been stopped, or they can use it as an excuse to pull you over if they don't like the look of you.
Most car speedo's as I understand it are set on the "safe side" and most likely a speedo reading of 75mph is more like 70mph in reality.
Personally I don't think it's worth "testing" if you see a state trooper with a radar in his hand.
I use my GPS for most accurate speed, and I set the cruise at 4 over the limit. When I'm in town, I go with the flow.
I learned the semi-hard way. I was stopped for doing 81 in a 75 out in the middle of absolutely nowhere in Montana on I-94 a few years ago - daytime, not a car on the road, not a cloud in the sky. I got a written warning.
