That proposal to build a tramway to the confluence of the big and Little Colorado Rivers is pretty much dead, but since I first posted this report about my trip through the Grand Canyon, something else has come up that's almost as bad! A Phoenix based company is seeking approval for preliminary permits to study the feasibility of creating four new reservoirs east of the Grand Canyon, two of them directly on the Little Colorado River.
On the one hand, you have a project that will provide water and power, as well as creating jobs in a region that needs all of the above. On the other hand, you have the permanent destruction of a site that is sacred to the Hopi and the Navajo, and should by rights, be sacred to all the rest of us as well! That makes for some tough choices. I'd hate to think that ours might be the last generation to see this place intact!
