Thats a cool image from the webcam, good catch. The cloud has set in now, but they are only expecting this weather front to produce less than an inch of new snow. Not good !
Dave.
Summer days are here....

You can even see the burned areas from last season's fire to the behind and towards the upper right relative to Half Dome.

Still no sign of a big storm bringing significant snow and boy would it need to be to make up for the drought this year ! A blog from Tuolumne Meadows reports it too dry to ski below 8600ft.
Quote:
We spent the past week on patrol in the northern reaches of Yosemite for the Sierra Nevada red fox project. The snowpack is significantly deeper there, with an average of three feet of snow on the ground. Unfortunately, it is so dry below 8,600 feet that we had to carry our skis for ten miles before hitting “ski line.” Some would consider this excessive, but for us it was well worth the effort. The skiing and weather were perfect for spring skiing and camping
5th May at 11.00 am (I need to use it just after this so more wishful thinking than a wise guess perhaps?)
The driest and warmest year on record continues with little sign of change. Mono Lake's water level reportedly dropped 5 feet lower than when the drought began, revealing 2800 acres of newly exposed land. The word is that a full years of percipitation has been 'lost in the last 3 years in the Mono Basin. Not good for the water table !
Could this mean Tioga Pass will open in April for only the second time on record and the first time since 1988 ?
Dave.
Very dry conditions, indeed....

It's so sad to have so little snow that an early date is possible. Sigh. Glacier Point was scheduled to open today. I'll go for April 17th at 10 am. I'll also guess again if road opening is held to complete the planned road work or arrange staffing.
The road to Glacier point opened today, the first time it has done so in March since Yosemite NP started recording the dates and over 2 weeks earlier than last years record breaking opening.
Looking beyond the official Yosemite NP records we can find April openings.
In 1976 and 1977 Tioga Pass opened on April 10th and 8th respectively. Could this be beaten this year ? I think not, but perhaps this year will beat the last April opening which happened on the 29th in 1988. Personally speaking, I would like to see April dump a lot of snow in the Sierras to help the water table.
Dave.
Looks like they got some snow. Glacier Point, Mariposa Grove, and Hetch Hetchy roads are all closed, and 120 and 41 are on chain restriction 2 - chains required except on 4wd with snow tires.
